Three shot as police battle taxi drivers in Kyengera

Three people have been shot and admitted to Mulago Hospital with serious bullet wounds after running battles between police and rival groups of commuter tax operators at Kyengera trading centre, on Masaka road in Wakiso District.

Riot police officers used live bullets and tear gas to stop a battle between taxi operators who operate at Kibuye - Kyengera stage who were demonstrating against what they referred to as oppressive policies imposed on to them by their colleagues who operate at the Kampala – Kyengera stage. They drivers also accuse the leadership of Kyengera Town Council of introducing prohibitive levies.
The drivers and touts parked their vehicles in the middle of Masaka Road and blocked a section between Kyengera and Busega trading centres leaving hundreds of travellers who use the road stranded.
